Does one size fit all? The impact of cognitive skills on economic growth

Les Documents de Travail de l'IREDU, n°2016-1; This paper tests for heterogeneous effects of cognitive skills on economic growth across countries. Using a new extended dataset on cognitive skills and controlling for potential endogeneity, we find that the magnitude of the effect is about 60 per cent higher for low-income countries compared to high-income countries, and it more than doubles when low TFP countries are compared to high TFP countries. There are also marked differences across geographic regions. Ce chapitre vise à fournir une vue de l'évolution des idées monétaires dans l'Europe moderne. Il s'alimente notamment des textes des auteurs du présent livre pour en dégager quelques leçons. Dans un premier temps, il discutera du sens du substantif " mercantilisme " tel qu'il a été construit depuis le milieu du dix-huitième siècle : examiner les fondements historiques de cette notion permettra d'en montrer les impasses. Il présentera, dans un second temps, une catégorisation des auteurs construite à partir de leur rapport au pouvoir.

Ce livre traite du déploiement des idées monétaires dans le monde européen de l'époque moderne, depuis les écrits de Nicolas Copernic (1517) jusqu'à la veille de la publication de l'ouvrage économique majeur écrit par Adam Smith (1776) . Il met l'accent sur le contexte historique dans le cadre duquel ces idées monétaires ont vu le jour. International audience; This article aims at studying the formation process of personal identities of men forced to work at the oar in Naples at the end of the 16th century in comparison with the Kingdom of Valencia at the beginning of the 17th. At that time, Naples and Valencia were two of the most important slave markets as well as trading cities of the Spanish Empire. The research will take into account two types of sources that have remained largely unexplored by historiography to date, and especially a book dating back to 1585 detailing the biographies of 657 slaves. The framework of the paper is built on a typology of monetary systems, by which a dualist system is distinguished from a metallic one. This article explores the long-term dynamics of material use in France over a period of 185 years. It is based on material flow accounts that are perfectly consistent with the standards of Material Flows Analysis at the national economic scale. This work - which covers domestic extraction, imports and exports - is the first long-term study of material flows for France, with annual and national data for most of the period. Our database allows us to study the evolution of French metabolism during the industrialization of the country, together with the increasing dependence on abiotic materials.
